Assessment, Referral and Advocacy:

This service links individuals and families to relevant community resources. Military members and those in their immediate family who are faced with a difficult situation can meet with the Prevention, Support and Intervention Coordinator who will provide an assessment and then refer family members to appropriate community services and resources.

Consultations are also available to provide extra support when dealing with community resources and a counsellor will advocate on your behalf, assisting you to receive the best services possible from all providers.

Short-term Counselling / Crisis Support:

The TMFRC supports family members in times of crisis. Military families that are experiencing emergency or difficult situations may contact the Prevention, Support and Intervention Coordinator who will provide emergency short-term support counselling. This program is designed to enhance the families’ social functioning and emotional well-being as well as to directly support those who have been affected by an individual or community crisis.

Education and Prevention:

It is important for individuals and families to understand and manage general health and lifestyle stressors. The TMFRC presents workshops and seminars about all types of family matters including violence prevention, managing stress, meditation techniques, coping strategies for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and much more. You will be given strategies and skills to promote a general healthy well-being, prevent crises and manage lifestyle stressors. Visit our Event Calendar for upcoming workshops.

Self-Help Groups:

The purpose of a support group is to connect with others for mutual support and relationship building. Self-help groups offered through the support and intervention program are geared towards sharing common experiences, developing coping skills, preventing crises, and sharing and connecting with others who have also shared a similar experience. A variety of groups are organized each year, so it’s best to check with the Prevention, Support and Intervention Coordinator to find out when a particular group is being offered. We support you and your family members to get through difficult times, and to manage concerns like addictions, relationships, mental health, violence, abuse and more.

Family Violence Prevention & the Family Crisis Team:

Education is a key component of the CF family violence prevention strategy. Education promotes increased awareness of the problem, reduces the tolerance for this type of behaviour, fosters appropriate responses to family violence and ensures that victims and their families are aware of the services available.

The Family Crisis Team is a team of local personnel, normally including personnel, chaplains, the military police, MFRCs prevention, support and intervention coordinators, and professional health and social service workers from the civilian community.

Core principles of the Family Crisis Team:

  • the safety of victims is the primary concern
  • family violence is not acceptable behaviour within the CF
  • CF leadership must play an active role in the prevention of family violence
  • all reported incidents of family violence must be acted upon
  • all possible assistance and support to victims are provided in a discreet and empathic manner with due regard to family privacy
  • the importance of gender dynamics when responding to incidents of family violence is recognized
  • confidentiality for all individuals involved in family violence cases, including victims, offenders, family members and those who reported the suspected incidents, is afforded to the maximum extent possible under the law
  • counselling and support services will be offered to the offender as appropriate (DAOD 5044-4)

The Toronto Family Crisis Team strives to provide continual education throughout the GTA to CF units, members, and families through briefings, educational groups and events, public awareness campaigns and strong relationships with Commanding Officers in addressing the issues of family violence. The team works to respond immediately and effectively in family violence situations, ensuring the safety of all family members is at the forefront, and that proper referrals and supports are in place.

All support services, referrals, questions and reports are confidential and discussed among team members and appropriate community organizations at the discretion of all family members.

If you know of or suspect family violence in your community, take a stand and report it. Reports or inquiries can be made to any member of the Family Crisis Team, a unit Chaplain, or Commanding Officer.
