Prevention, Support & Intervention - Programs

PREVENTION

It is important for individuals and families to understand and manage general health and lifestyle stressors. The TMFRC present workshops and seminars for the members of the military community about all types of family matters including managing stress, violence prevention, mediation techniques, coping strategies for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD) and Operational Stress Injuries (OSI's) and much more. The aim is to ensure you are given strategies and skills to promote a general healthy well-being, prevent crises and manage lifestyle stressors.

We try to implement workshops/courses/support based on the suggestions and feedback we hear from you!

SUPPORT & INTERVENTION

Assessment, Referral and Advocacy:

This service links individuals and families to relevant community resources. Military members and those in their immediate family who are faced with a difficult situation can meet with the Prevention Support and Intervention Co-ordinator who will provide an assessment and then refer clients to professional and community resources appropriate to their needs, including psychosocial services in the civilian community. We will always support you through the referral process.

Consultations are also available to provide extra support when dealing with community resources and a social worker will advocate on your behalf, assisting you to receive the best services possible from all providers.

Short-term Counselling / Crisis Support:

The TMFRC supports family members in times of crisis. Military families that are experiencing emergency or difficult situations may contact Prevention Support and Intervention Co-ordinator who will provide short-term support counselling (up to 8 sessions). This program is designed to enhance families social functioning and emotional well-being as well as directly support those who have been affected by an individual or community crisis. If you could use some help, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Mutual Aid Groups:

The purpose of a Mutual Aid Group is to connect with others for support and relationship building. Through mutual exchanges we are better able to understand each other and enhance our coping by learning from the experiences of others. Mutual Aid groups offered through the PSI program are geared towards developing coping strategies, preventing crises, connecting with others who have also shared a similar experience. A variety of groups are organized, its best to check the Events Calendar find out what is being offered. We are always interested to hear your ideas about starting a new group!

Grief Support Programs:

Rainbows for Elementary Aged Children
Rainbows is a highly structured 12 week program that fosters emotional healing among children grieving a loss from a life-altering crisis such as divorce, separation or the death of a parent or sibling. This program enables children to deal with the normal feelings associated with grief and loss in a peer support environment. Space is limited to five participants (one child per family) who will meet at the centre for one hour a week. A caring, trained facilitator leads each group. Groups are age, material and activity appropriate.

Prism - A Group for Parents:

A parallel program to Rainbows for parents and step-parents to work through their own issues with grief, loss and separation, help their children and rebuild the family unit.
